I wouldn’t have looked at it anyway

Not that it matters–I wouldn’t have looked at it anyway, even if we were hiring (which we are not)– Magnetic toys the CV was not attached.

Hopefully the problems with this approach needs no explanation, Magnetic toys I’ll provide one anyway. The first thing I–the potential employer–thought upon seeing this was “spam.” Then, when I realized that it was indeed a personal message–sort of–I was bothered that this person didn’t respect me, my time, or my organization enough to send a message that at least acknowledged what we do and, ideally, made Neodymium bar magnets effort to relate his experience and expertise to the needs of the organization. (Can he write? Does he have editing experience? How much does he know about science careers?) This message could have been—and probably was–sent, unchanged, to hundreds, maybe thousands, of potential employers. And every one of them (except me, I suppose) probably gave it about the same amount of attention as the latest Viagra pitch.

My first impression was pretty much correct. This, effectively, is spam. Spamming y magnets for sale potential employers is no way to run a job search.

Guerrilla marketing, by committee

Dave Jensen, magnets for sale Tooling Up contributor, gives Neodymium bar magnets spot-on advice this week in his column “Guerrilla Marketing Yourself”. Dave advises people to “participate in local meetings of associations and trade groups in y magnets for sale field of interest. Get on their committees and volunteer for jobs that no one else wants to do. You’ll gain a reputation as a person to count on, and it will benefit you with increased visibility.”

Before joining Science’s Next Wave in 2003, I saw up-close the processes Dave describes. I spent most of the previous 13 years managing technical standards committees and occasionally writing about them for the technology trade press. Participating in industry groups is easier than you might think, and it can often be done remotely; in magnets for sale committees, most of the work was conducted by listservs and conference calls, with face-to-face meetings convened quarterly or semi-annually to iron-out the stickiest issues.

These face-to-face meetings may have been technical, officially, Magnetic toys behind the scenes, there was plenty of marketing going on, both corporate and personal. It was not unusual to see a committee member wearing a golf shirt with one company’s logo at one meeting and sporting another company’s golf shirt at the next session.
